Hard to ‘hang 10′ in South Florida this summer

August 5th, 2009

It’s lousy to be a surfer in South Florida.

At least right now anyway.

Sure, there’s sun, sand and that beautiful blue body of water that lures folks to the beach. But the Atlantic just isn’t providing those wild waves that makes being a surfer, well, fun.

So at surf camps throughout the area this summer, kids are learning things like how to paddle, snorkel, even how to tell the difference between the seashells peeking through the sand.

March 2009 News & Specials

March 9th, 2009

The early spring surf season in Florida offers a more consistent wave pattern up and down the east coast of the state. Beach and water conditions are on the verge of warming up so this can be the more ideal time of the year to paddle out and work on your surfing skills. This again is Florida and the current water temperatures from south to central Florida range from the low to mid 70s. Florida is a great place to learn to surf and develop those skills because of our mild water temperatures throughout the year and normally smaller and safer surf conditions compared to other surfing states or countries. Get your surf season rolling with a stress reliever by heading out to surf and build those skills as the year progresses!

SURF TIPS
—————–
Choosing the right location as a beginner:
As a beginner surfer you need to go to surfing spots where more advanced surfers ignore. This will allow you to get the waves you want, give you plenty of practice, advance your skills faster and most importantly keep you safe.

If you have the opportunity surf at small reef breaks or sand bars with safe bottoms of sand, kelp or sea grass. Avoid areas or rocks, coral or surf that breaks violently. Gentle breaking beach breaks can offer the same options. Always use good judgment and be constantly aware of your surroundings because sea conditions can change quickly and become dangerous. It is also a good idea to look at the surf/weather forecasts and tides of the day.

Local surf shops can give you great advice about where to surf based on your abilities and what to be aware of. Be honest with your skill level so you get accurate information to keep yourself safe.

Fall 2008 Specials & Updates

October 14th, 2008

The weather is cooling down and the surf consistently is picking us.  We have had a fun and memorial summer here at Florida Surf Lessons.  We have once again run a series of exciting summer surf camps and a number of large events from Miami to Ft. Pierce and all the way up to Cocoa Beach.  Our larger events included groups from Sea World, Miami YMCA, and the JCCs. We also had the honor and privilege of working with new surfers from the HMS Richmond when they were in port in Miami (see pictures below).  Our staff has been very diligent on offering the basic surfing skills to new surfers here in Florida.  We have introduced Stand Up Paddle Surfing on smaller wave days to mix up the enjoyment and offer a more complete beginner surf lesson.   As we get into the fall and winter months we normally have better wave consistency up and down the coast.  So now is a great time to relieve some of today’s stress and get out and surf!

SURFING DO AND DON’TS:

  • Alcohol. Surfing under the influence is not a good idea. Save the drinking for the after surf bragging session at your local, telling everyone just how many barrels you got earlier.
  • Be Aware. Be aware of other surfers and water users, of the surf conditions, and of where you are surfing (see Patrolled Beaches).
  • Comfort Zone. You should surf in waves that you are comfortable in, don’t get in over your head.
  • Fitness. Make sure you are physically fit when surfing. You need to be able to swim back to shore if you lose your board at the end of an exhausting session - no
mean feat in a 3 meter swell.
  • Food. As with swimming, do not go surfing for at least 45 minutes after a meal.
  • Fun. Surfing is all about having fun, keep it in mind when you are out in the waves.
  • Hold or Throw. Know when to hold onto your surfboard and when to get rid of it. If you are paddling out then keep hold of your board, you’ll get out back to the line
up more quickly and you will not put anyone paddling out behind you at risk. If you are about to wipe-out then get rid of your board. You are far more likely to sustain an injury if you and your board are getting washed around together.
  • Patrolled Beaches. If you are surfing on a patrolled beach make sure that you keep within the designated surfing are. Take note of where you should be surfing before you go out, and make sure you stick to it when you are out.
  • Priority. Always make sure that you are not taking anyone else’s wave. Remember, the surfer who is closest to the breaking wave has priority. If you see someone already on a wave then the wave is taken and you’ll have to wait for the next one.
  • Practice. If you want to improve then you need to be in the water surfing as regularly as possible. No-one got any better at anything by staying home and watching TV.
  • Respect. Respect the locals if you are visiting a beach. Remember that you are a guest and that waves should be shared.
  • Rips. If you are caught in a rip remember that it’s called R.I.P. for a reason and you will probably not make it back to dry land ever again. Although hopefully you already know that a rip is a strong current that (normally) goes straight out to sea and if caught in one that you should not panic and paddle across the rip (not against it) until you have escaped.
  • Sun Block. Always wear a good waterproof sun block. You’ll know about it if you have been out for a few hours surfing in the sun without it. Also if you are not wearing a Wetsuit it is a good idea to wear a UV proof rash vest for body protection.
  • Surf Buddy. Always surf with at least one other person. Not only will you have more fun if you are sharing your waves but you will always have someone to help you out if you need it.
  • Surf Conditions. Make sure that the surf is safe before you go in. If you are going surfing at a spot you are unfamiliar with it is a good idea to get some advice from a local. Check out the surf spot while warming up.
  • Warm-up. Always have a quick warm-up and stretch before entering the surf. This will reduce the risk of muscle injury or cramp whilst you are surfing. It also gives you time to check for any rips or where the best spot to catch waves is.

Please let us know about any surfing request you may have and we will do our best to accommodate.

Aloha! From the FSL Crew

2008 Surf Camps—Register Today! click here
We have just finished up our summer surf camps this summer and we had great success getting some newbie’s surfing and having an awesome time. Camps ran from late May and into August. We had family, teen, kids and even adult camps. We are already setting things up for camps next summer and plan to have camps in Cocoa Beach and Jupiter.

One of our group Sessions.

We had a number of large events this summer from a variety of organizations. Our better group sizes ran from 40 to 80 students.

Stand Up Paddle Surfing!

Stand up paddle surfing (SUP) is an older concept of surfing practiced by Hawaiians in the past. It consists of using a large long surf board and you move by paddling with a long paddle. The Beach Boys did it way back when and now even Jimmy Buffet is shown doing SUP on screen with his latest tour. SUP is an alternate choice of surfers to stay in shape and ride waves. Board designs and shapes have been innovative and SUP has now evolved to be the hip, slick and cool thing to do on the water. Some board designers are incorporating mounts for sails so the SUP can act as a sail board, surf board or paddle board.

The learning curve can be challenging especially at first in ruff surf or when working currents or wind. SUP is a great upper body work out but it takes a lot of patience and practice to get good in the waves. The optimal wave to work with would be a slow moving one to tow foot wave that builds and breaks slowly and hopefully does not close out too hard. With practice, just like surfing this can be another fun water person activity

Safe Surfer Certification Now Available

We are is pleased to announce our newest certification program: Safe Surfer Certification

This program has been in development for over 3 years, and is the result of countless hours devoted towards research and development.

Remarkably it is the first of its kind in Florida and was created with new surfers, experienced surfers and ocean front personnel supervising surfing activities in mind. The core of this program focuses on repetition and memorization of important concepts such as: knowing safety procedures, understanding rip currents and knowing how to recognize dangerous marine life, just to name a few.

By doing this the student gains a deeper and clearer understanding of the principles that need to be understood in order to pursue surfing in a safe and comfortable manner.

Find out more how you or someone you care about can become Safe Surfer Certified.

City Of Margate - The Park and Recreation Summer Camp Goes Surfing!

On Friday, June 16th - 2006 we taught a group of inner city kids who come from all over Florida to participate in the City of Margate “Camp Senior” summer camp program This program is one of a kind due to the fact that it focuses on adventure activities. While kids at other camps are chasing each other with squirt guns or just bouncing a basketball ball around these guys are actually doing things like: going surfing, para-sailing, and deep sea fishing just to name a few!

This is the first time we have encountered a city summer camp program like this - simply amazing, and certainly a model for other cities follow.

It was a wonderful experience working with these kids. They all stood up and rode waves! What a blast! Rick, one of our instructors was quoted saying “Guys, nothing would make me happier then to paddle out at at my favorite surf spot and see some your faces out there in the line up”. Ditto Rick - the rest of us feel the same way too!

One Of The Best Surf Camps In The World By Newsweek Magazine!

Magazine: Newsweek
Issue Date:
May 22, 2006
Section: Tip Sheet - Page 76

Most of the time hard work and dedication go unnoticed. When someone does notice and compliments you on it, it usually makes you feel good, and sometimes even - real good! That is how we felt when Newsweek Magazine listed Florida Surf Lessons as one of the best surf camps in the world. Someone noticed!

When we were informed several weeks back that we were being considered for inclusion we simply thought that we were going to be listed along side the best surf schools and camps in Florida.

It turned out that since Newsweek is an international magazine they were interested in the worlds best surf camps, not just the best surf camps of one state or country.

Needless to say we are very excited to have achieved recognition from such a wonderful magazine.
